On August 21, 2006, Hynes Charter School officially opened its doors as a conversion charter school authorized by Orleans Parish School Board. Hynes Charter School is now located at 3774 Gentilly Blvd., in the former St. James Major School. The newly rebuilt school will reopen in August 2011 at the original campus located in the heart of Lakeview at 990 Harrison Avenue.
